State of the Trail - 2010 Season

This section is there to keep you informed about the state of the trail and new developments in maintenance throughout the whole season.  This section will be updated as soon as we receive new information.

The writing of this section was made possible because of the numerous field reports that we received from the sponsors and volunteers who collaborate with us to improve the trail.  We are proud to present the summation of their work here and we invite you to help the IAT-QC by sharing any comment that you have about the Trail.  If you want to volounteer, please let us know.  Remember that most of the maintenace and reports are done by volounteers and that we are working hard to offer you an extraordinary trail, but most of all, a safe trail.

Welcome to our wonderful trail and thanks for your patience!

Overall State

July 26 2010 - On its opening date, June 24, the trail was overall in a good state.  Maintenance tasks were undertaken in the Matane Wild Life Reserve in Fall 2009 and other maintenance chores were completed in many sections of the trail since June 5, National Trails Day.

Caution About Access Backroads

Even though access backroads to the trail are shown on our topographic maps, we cannot guarantee that they can be safely driven on.  The IAT-QC is not liable when access roads are concerned.  Please ask the local population or the IAT-QC office before planning to drive on theses roads.

Avignon

September 21rst 2009

Various tasks were undertaken in the Avignon section in the past months.  The entrance to the trail at point 645 (5 kilometres ''North'' of Matapedia) was cleared off in mid-July. A section between Lagace Road and point 644 was also cleaned up at the end of August.  The entrace of the the trail that is on the same road was cleaned up as well and the signs were secured.  On September 14th, a staircase was built close to the parking lot of Saint-André and the area was also cleared off.

July 10th 2009

The Canyon Clark area remains dangerous until safety ropes are installed.  Keep being on your guards when crossing this area.

June 22th 2009

We have received a complete report concerning the state of this section.  Between Matapedia and Saint-André, about 20 trees have fallen and around trail marker 634, a stream that has invaded the trail.  We will build a bridge as soon as possible and trees will be removed.  For the Corbeau section, there are a few trees across the trail, but it remains accessible.  In the Clark Canyon section, signage will soon be more developed.  The trail running from kilometre 609 to km 620 is partly cleared and will be completely cleared soon.  Finally, the Quartz refuge section is dangerous for the moment.  Uprooted, but still upright trees may fall.  The section requires extra prudence and vigilance at all times.  We hope that all remaining problems will be corrected shortly.

Matapedia Valley

July 26 2010 - The trail in can be hiked in safely.  Some sections need improvement, but nothing major.

Matane Wild Life Reserve

July 26 2010 - The Matane Wild Life Reserve is in a good state except for the following parts.

As of June 5, many trees had fallen in the access trail for Mount Pointu but they can be bypassed.

As of June 5, three footwalks were being repaired west of Des Pins parking area.

As of June 5, about thirty trees and fir heads had fallen in the trail and around the Gros Ruisseau accommodation site (the site is in a good state).

Upper Gaspé

August 17 2010

A volunteer team has worked to open the section between Manche-d'Épée and Madeleine.  It is now hikable.  Signage was improved at a tricky intersection.

The shelter in Manche-d'Épée is temporarily unavailable but it should open again in September.

Beween Anse-Pleureuse and Gros-Morne, the trail needs brushcutting and clean up.  Some intersections can be puzzling because some signs are hidden by the vegetation.  Keep an eye open in that area.

A short section at the beginning of the trail by the viewpoint in Mont-Louis needs brushcutting since there is a lot of vegetation.

In the Chic-Chocs Reserve north of Les Cabourons refuge the trail is hard to hike in because of firs leaning in the trail and fir heads that had fallen in.  A clean up should be done soon.

July 26 2010 - The Upper Gaspé section is in a good state and signage was improved in the section between Road 2 and Les Cabourons refuge.  Trees had fallen over in the trail during Winter 2009 in the section between Manche-d'Épée and Madeleine-Centre and may slow you down.  They should be soon taken off.

Gaspe Coast

August 17 2010 - Les Terrasses lean-to is open again.

August 3 2010 - Les Terrasses lean-to should be open by August 9.

July 26 2010 - The trail in the Gaspé Coast area is overall in a good state.  Please consider the following elements.

As of July 20 2010, it seems that vegetation has taken over in the area between Petite-Vallée and Les Terrasses lean-to.  Les Terrasses lean-to is temporarily closed for repairs.

As of July 20 2010, Les Cascades refuge needs a clean-up, which should be undertaken by the municipality of Cloridorme.

As of June 25, the footwalk near Saint-Maurice-de-l'Échouerie is hazardous and needs repair.  Please use caution.
