“La grande traversée” starts at the east end of the park with a gradual ascent to Mont Jacques-Cartier, the second highest peak in Québec with its altitude of 1270 m (4167’). We continue on McGerrigle plateau to Mount Xalibu, before starting our descent to the shelter near Mont-Albert campground, for a total distance of 26 km (16 mi). The second day (beginning of “Le caribou”), we enter the Chic-Chocs and we travel 22 km (13.7 mi), passing by Mont Albert to reach La Paruline shelter. The next day, we rest by walking a short 8 km (5 mi) to Le Pluvier shelter, located at Lake Cascapédia. On the fourth day (beginning of “L’orignal”), we walk 20 km (12.4 mi) to get to Le Huard shelter, passing through Pic du Brûlé and Pic de l’Aube. We continue our journey the next day (beginning of “Le chevreuil”) with 18 km (11.2 mi) that will lead us to Le Hibou shelter, passing through Mont Jacques Ferron, Mont des Loupes and Mont Louis-Marie Lalonde. Finally, on the sixth day, we will arrive at the Chic-Chocs Mountain Lodge, after visiting Mont Logan and Mont Matawees and passing through Fernald’s Ecological Reserve and Matane’s Wildlife Reserve (distance: 17 km / 10.6 mi). The next and final day, you will have the opportunity to hike, mountain bike, or simply relax at the Inn.
Conditions: We offer our hikes anytime between June 25th and mid-October on request, subject to availability of shelters, at least 30 days before the date of arrival. Departures are guaranteed as soon as we confirm a minimum of 4 participants for packages
Our hikes take place on uneven ground, including varying elevation. They are accessible to anyone in good health with basic hiking experience (day hikes). It is important to train regularly in the weeks before your hike with us. The higher difficulty of these packages comes mainly from the greater distances to travel everyday. We walk between 4 and 9 hours a day, and everyone can walk at their own rhythm and speed.
“La grande traversée” begins at an altitude of 800 m (2625’) and climbs to the summit of Mont Jacques-Cartier at 1270 m (4165’). Then we continue to the summit of Mont Xalibu (1140 m / 3740’), before walking 15 km (9.3 mi) to the campsite of Mont Albert (alt. 260 m / 855’). The next day (beginning of “Le caribou”), we climb to an altitude of 1070 m (3510’) to reach the plateau of Mont Albert, going down to 725 m (2380’). The third day is shorter and leads us to an altitude of 1000 m (3280’) and then down to 500 m (1640’) at Lake Cascapédia. We begin the western section of the park (beginning of “L’orignal”) by a gradual ascent to Pic du Brûlé (790 m / 2590’) and then to Pic de l’Aube (920 m / 3020’). We later descend to 550 m (1805’) to Le Huard shelter. On day 5 (beginning of “Le chevreuil”), we climb to Mont des Loupes (1070 m / 3510’), and cross a valley that makes us go down and up approximately 250 m (820’). Finally, the sixth day we climb 150 m (490’) to Mont Logan (1150 m / 3775’), before reaching Mont Fortin (1020 m / 3345’) and Mont Matawees (1073 m / 3520’), to finally get to the Chic-Choc Mountain Lodge (alt. 600 m / 1970’).
