General information and some advice(councils) :

In the forests of Quebec, Maine and New Brunswick, we find the black bear. Renowned discreet and fearful, nevertheless it is about an impressive animal which can constitute a threat. He does not look for the confrontation and he is especially obsessed by the food.

Be careful and suspend your reserves, your pans and even the toothpaste and the soap on supports with food, when available. There is in all the shelters and the campings of the SIA, with the exception of those situated in the Valley of Matapédia and in the national park of Gaspésie (use the cabin of toilet dry as deposit).

Indicate your presence by concerning you objects which produce jingles, little spherical bells to bear, speak, sing. We can also arm ourselves with a whistle attached outside of the backpack, outside of the horn with mist or still outside of the Cayenne pepper.

What to make during a meeting with the black bear?

If you meet one, stay calm and take time to analyze the situation.

If he did not see you, admire him by far and go away silently.

If he saw you, stop walking. Speak to him quite slowly. Wave. Do not shout and do not make abrupt movements. Keep the eye contact and leave him a corridor of flight. Go away without turning the back him and by speaking slowly so that he knows that you are a human being and not a prey.

If he(it) approaches you, avoid looking at him in eyes, try to find tools of persuasion or defense (stick, knife, rock), distract him in dropping objects, speak loudly. Do not run, what would cause its predator's instincts. In the last resort, throw him your reserves.

In case of attack, defend yourselves with some Cayenne pepper or with everything you can get your hands on, use the natural obstacles (rocks, trees) as shield. Do not forget to shout, what could alert other people on the path. The fact of rising in a tree can represent a solution, the grown-up bears do not climb on it spontaneously. It's better to face the black bear that to play dead.

Frank Wihbey du Maine tells us: " in my hundred miles of hike in the wood, I have never met them, not only once! "
